Discs: SHAWN COLVIN

Rating: NNN

The omnipresence of long-time Shawn Colvin collaborator John Leventhal on Whole New You (he co-wrote every song, including one with Edie Brickell, and produced) suggests that the onset of new motherhood has drained the Lilith lovely artistically. But sometime during recording, she relocated her spirit — she cuts through these gently rocking, acoustic pop songs like a hot knife through butter, her voice as engaging as the strings swooping through key tracks. If there’s any complaint, it’s that Colvin tends to conjure the same coffeehouse spirit regardless of the lyrical content at hand.
