Discs: SPACEHOG

Rating: NNN

Spacehog are probably too smart for their own good. While the group’s acerbic pisstakes would earn them genius status in their native UK, in irony-challenged America the tongue-in-cheek patriotism of songs like This Is America is bound to be taken at face value. Similarly, Spacehog’s tendency to sub-reference would spin Dennis Miller’s head — witness the nod to Steely Dan’s Aja on A Real Waste Of Food and to the Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar on And It Is. Still, for all the wink-wink, nudge-nudge going on, the harmony-rich glam rock dealt here is winning. Points also for demystifying the vacuous rock-and-roll high life in At Least I Got Laid.
