DL Incognito’s consistency is to be commended. Now on his fourth album, he hasn’t quite broken out of the three-verse-and-chorus song structure. Soulful violins and a gentle Spanish guitar slide all over the mid-tempo boom-bap drum patter of the pleasant album opener, reminiscent of previous DL creations. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? After the diminished impact of the next song, the tingling vocal sample introducing Too Late Now grabs the ears with an inviting Cheers-theme-like piano stroke. And big up the Channel Live lyrical reference.
DJ Techtwelve consistently comes through with butter-smooth backdrops for the life-inspired lyrics of DL, and the album’s only guest, Theo 3, absolutely murders The Atmosphere with syllable slickness on I Owe It All To You, a touching tribute to DL’s late mother.
Time will tell if these 12 tracks of straightforward mic-rocking take DL to places he’s never been. But fans of this humble Ottawa MC won’t be disappointed.
