Doves

Rating: NN

After 2003’s The Last Broadcast, the Doves took some time off to play celebrity DJ in the clubs, mixing some northern soul with their favourite acid house anthems. Sound hideous? Well, evidently they were so taken with the bouncy 60s swingers that they’ve tried incorporating some into the surging bass lines and snapping drumming on their new Some Cities album. But with programmer/engineer Ben Hillier (Blur, Elbow, Echobelly) producing, it’s not surprising that the “soul” bit was lost in the mix. Of course, Hillier is only partly to blame, since it really takes skilled musicians to play that stuff and someone with real pipes to sing it – and Jimi Goodwin is no Eddie Spencer or even Charles Spurling. Maybe they should get a Wigan Casino comp and try again in two years.
