DOWN & OUT WITH THE DOLLS

DOWN & OUT WITH THE DOLLS (Lakeshore) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

You don’t see compilations coming out boasting that they feature “All Boys!!!,” so it shouldn’t really matter that all the artists on this soundtrack are female. But alas, it does. This is a soundtrack for a film “celebrating girl rock” about the rise and fall of an all-girl band, the Paper Dolls. The Paper Dolls, however, aren’t the best band on this record. Many of these rock-punk grrrly tunes are amazing, namely the Bangs’ He’s A Groupie and the Angoras’ Sick Dance, with its skittery percussion and sweet vocals, and Bombers’ Hot As Fuck just rocks your ass off in a Lita-Ford-gone-badder kinda way. Watch out for these chicks. Ten per cent of the net proceeds go to Portland, Oregon’s, Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, a summer camp dedicated to helping young would-be rockers realize their potential. Cool.
