While experimental artist Matthew Barney can be forgiven for being unaware of the dangers of Guy Ritchie Syndrome when he got his partner Björk to compose and produce the music to accompany his film Drawing Restraint 9, her track record with soundtracks should’ve been indication enough of the potential disaster in store. Not that Barney’s too worried about the box office perfomance of his latest art house curio, but the number of people interested in seeing his film because of Björk’s involvement will likely be fewer than those driven away by the creepy sound of her mostly beatless, melody-free mood dirges built around wordlessly wailing vocals and lightly plucked harp. Some of it seems to be inspired by the Partridge Family’s Whale Song which, coming from Björk, isn’t at all that shocking.
