Drumheller

Rating: NNNN

It’s rare to come across five musicians (Eric Chenaux, Nick Fraser, Brodie West, Rob Clutton and Doug Tielli) who can come up with a selection of songs that challenges the avant-garde status quo, but what would you expect from a group who think John Fahey has more pop appeal than Justin Timberlake? Chenaux’s It Must Be So Easy has a funky bass line with tight drumming by Fraser, and offers one of the few moments approaching the conventional on the album. Still, by the time it comes around you’ve already abandoned yourself to the cacophony and accepted that odd time signatures are the new black. It’s weird and wonderful, like the Dirty Dozen Brass Brand with a touch of dementia.

Drumheller take over the Tranzac tonight (Thursday, July 28).
