Drums & Tuba are a bit of an experimental rock Lazarus story. After a brief hiatus in the late 90s, the group decided to take another kick at the can when Righteous Babe Ani DiFranco requested their services as an opening act on her tour. Sometimes it’s wiser to let sleeping dogs lie. The instrumental ensemble create droning, jagged surf-rock landscapes that go nowhere. The meandering tunes fuse hints of Afrobeat, klezmer, beat-heavy funk, wanky guitars and jazzy triphop into shapeless structures. Think Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, but really, really boring. Even the instruments get buried in the murky mix — every so often, you can follow a melodic horn line, a sharp guitar riff, or a cool tuba grunt, but for the most part it’s trippy fuzz. Drums & Tuba rock the Rivoli Saturday (September 21).
