DUST GALAXY

Rating: NN

It’s fashionable right now for sample-oriented producers to form real working bands of their own, so it’s not at all surprising that Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation decided to join in the fun. The unusual part is that instead of a loungey jazz act, he formed Dust Galaxy to kick out the jams garage-psych-style.

At least that’s the way it started. During the recording of their self-titled debut, Garza and crew lost their way and got into some placid sitar pop, dubbed-out reggae lite and a bit of strummy freak folk before calling it a day with a cheesy piano-backed slow dancer. Sadly, nothing here comes close to the mind-bending grandeur of their promising Come Hear The Trumpets single.

Dust Galaxy waltz into Circa Wednesday (November 14).
