Kinda still on the fence about Detroit’s organic soul champion, Dwele, who first broke out with the help of Slum Village, crooning mellowly (blandly, I thought) on the hook of their Tainted single. His explosive, horn-infected live set at Harbourfront this summer suggested a more exciting — and excited — Dwele was on the way, but Some Kinda sounds generally anemic. His soft, sensitive neo-soul coos and ad libs over streetwise lyrics about pimpin’ and love make this album (which Dwele produced entirely by himself) sound like something that would have been really cutting-edge in 1996.
