How far can a band take its list of influences? Early Man certainly take theirs a few good miles, pairing the riff chuggage of early-80s thrash with occasional Sabbathesque doom. Matt Sweeney's crunchy production lends the duo as authentic a sound as could be hoped for, but when vocalist Mike Conte trades his Ozzyish wail for an overtly Hetfieldian grunt, it becomes clear how far they're willing to go for the sake of homage. As adept regurgitation, Early Man stand, teetering, on two of their four feet. That said, Death Is the Answer may be the best Sabbath song Sabbath never wrote.
