Eastmountainsouth (DreamWorks/Universal) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
A classically trained film music student from Alabama and a former punk screamer from Virginia don't seem like the a natural pairing for a moody mountain-style project like Eastmountainsouth, but Peter Adams and Kat Maslich have somehow clicked on their Apalach-electro concept album. That Eastmountainsouth's darkly sexy debut is such a captivating listen has as much to do with Adams's clever arrangements and his beautiful vocal blend with Maslich's warmly comforting crooning as it does with the inventive and exquisitely tasteful production of Mitchell Froom. If you can manage to suspend disbelief when Maslich and Adams sorrowfully lament about their hard times working in fields, it's quite an enjoyable listen. Eastmountainsouth appear at Hugh's Room Tuesday (July 8) and at the Rivoli Wednesday (July 9) with Creaking Tree String Quartet.
