In the third Eccodek album, the Guelph-based world beat dub band don’t stray far from their previous trajectory of heavy bass lines, trippy effects and disembodied guest vocals. This time, the singers come from five countries: Mali, Turkey, Fiji, Rwanda and India, and while they breathe some new colour into the tracks, the disc delivers essentially the same formula. Eccodek sound more like a real band, but oddly enough, that’s the weak link — the programmed drums have more funk than the live drums, which can sound too much like a rock drummer trying to get groovy.
Eccodek play Saturday (November 26) at the Drake Hotel
