Echo Boy Giraffe (Novamute) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
Echo Boy has been lumped in with the new-new wave, but that assessment may have been a bit hasty. Although there is a strong electro-pop tendency on Giraffe, it’s mixed with equal parts Brit rock. Unlike most of the acts he’s compared with, the sounds aren’t 80s-specific. His touring band includes Spiritualized members, and this album was produced by Flood (Depeche Mode, U2), which should give you an idea of where he’s headed. It might not be perfect, but Giraffe is still one of the most interesting electronic-pop records I’ve come across in a while.
