EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Perpetuum Mobile (Mute) Rating: NNNN

The proto-industrialists are back, and they’ve got some new machines to abuse. Using webcams and the Internet in their studio allowed fans to watch, listen and help direct the recording process and, according to the band, forced them to complete some songs that would otherwise have been discarded. As well, they’re using more air compressors as instruments this time around, and less banging of metal. Considering its themes of storms and catastrophes and the band’s reputation for noise, much of this disc is quite musical while still unconventional. Hard to say what the appropriate occasion for listening to it is, but it should be interesting to anyone who appreciates an experimental approach.
