Electrelane

Rating: NNNN

The lasses of Electrelane made much of their early rep, shutting up and letting the tunes do the talking. On this latest turn they speak out, and damned if it isn’t precisely what Electrelane need to rocket themselves to new heights of ingenuity and outright strangeness. Verity Susman’s voice stalks the back roads between Nico and Mark E. Smith, so untutored it gives her automatic alt-diva status. Credit Steve Albini for setting the vocals at a stratospheric height and keeping the instruments low. The effect, not so much lo-fi as low altitude, is that of being set loose in a thick fog with clouds swirling above your head.

Electrelane hit the Horseshoe Saturday (September 4).
