Underrated Los Angeles singer/songwriter Eleni Mandell's diverse musical interests have been more of a hindrance than a help in finding an audience, but the decision to bring in Andy Kaulkin to produce Miracle Of Five seems to have solved the problem of maintaining a stylistic focus. No more jazz or blues than country, Miracle Of Five lets Mandell finally incorporate all those inspirations into a sound that's her own. Credit Kaulkin with having the sense to let Mandell's gorgeous voice take the lead on this quietly seductive set of closing-time romance ballads. That, however, wouldn't have been possible without the tasteful support of guitar ace Nels Cline, vibraphonist DJ Bonebrake and saxophonist/clarinetist Jeff Turmes, along with mix specialist Rob Schnapf, who managed to strike the right balance. Forget Timberlake; it's Mandell who's bringing sexy back.
