Rating: NNN

In this 12-inch collection of four previously released songs and two brand new ones, the five MCs in this noisy 416-to-the-905 cabal of magnanimous anarchists come charging out of the gate. OK, maybe not charging – more rapping, and they do it well and in various styles. They’re all adept, but this EP doesn’t quite shine alike on each member individually. The beats are good, with Lemme Tell You a standout soul-sampling contribution from producer Simahlak. A few of the other songs’ string-driven backgrounds and solid but unremarkable drums made me nostalgic for the 90s NYC mixtape scene. Still, there’s momentum and intelligence here that will hopefully carry over to the group’s upcoming LP, Northern Horde.
