Eminem's promise that Recovery would be a true return to form was exciting news. Better yet, he would break Dr. Dre's production stranglehold to rhyme over beats by an array of producers, with guest appearances by pop stars - both refreshing career firsts.
Unfortunately, the results are patchy. Two fundamental problems: he's got an incredible amount of energy, raging away in the high-pitched voice that Eminem haters can't stand, with little to say that he hasn't already said before; and the beats are often middling. Ironically, Dr. Dre's contribution, So Bad, is a welcome moment.
The Lil Wayne collaboration No Love is unintentionally hilarious thanks to a Haddaway sample. And let's not even address the Pink-featuring Won't Back Down, with its squawking electric guitars - a pure Bizkit-era throwback.
