ENNIO MORRICONE

Rating: NNNN

Ennio Morricone has never had a problem setting the scene with exotic, wildly suggestive theme music, but nothing in the soundtrack king’s catalogue sounds as far out as this soundtrack for the 70s Italian thriller Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura.

Conducting his remarkably titled Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, Morricone comes up with a score that’s split between creeping suspense and funky action. Amid the spooky clicks and rattles, Morricone’s Gruppo swings like Dark Magus-era Miles Davis, layering wah-wah guitar and clattering percussion over moody, drawn-out trumpet lines and organ riffs. If the action onscreen is as surreal as the music, the film should be a classic.MG
