ERIC BIBB, RORY BLOCK & MARIA MULDAUR Sisters & Brothers (Telarc/Universal) Rating: NNN
Rating: NNN
Recorded in an old timber-frame barn, this album has the feel of a classic Alan Lomax field recording. Combining traditional elements of blues, folk, soul and R&B in a minimalist setting has paid off for these three. The songs have a timeless, organic feel, and while almost half of them are original numbers, each has a traditional quality. Versions of contemporary compositions like Bill Withers’s Lean On Me and Bob Dylan’s Gotta Serve Somebody meld seamlessly with the likes of Maggie Campbell and Little Rain.
