The latest from pint-sized guitar phenom Erin McKeown will have those who know her from the folkie-girl collective Voices on the Verge scratching their heads. Building on the genre-hopping pop template of 2003's Grand disc, McKeown creates a cohesive set of wistfully summery tunes centred around her sweet warble and spiked with a healthy dose of resonator guitar riffs. Instead of the customary sounscape creak, co-producer Tucker Martine goes for a cool collage feel to the singer/songwriter ditties. Juana Molina also helps out with vocals and chilled-out electronic bits that work well with McKeown's girlish chirp. And while the lyrics sometimes veer into philosophical babble, McKeown's reliance on simple exclamatory statements - like the ecstatic cries of "Alleluia!" and "Roll on!" - can inspire the bursts of existential joy you get from listening to an awesome gospel track.
McKeown plays the Drake Wednesday (July 6).
