Local songsmith Evalyn Parry is a folk singer in the old tradition. Her witty lyrics reveal her deep political consciousness, and her elegantly minimalist arrangements beef up her sweet but sometimes reedy Joan Baez-lite vocals. Unreasonable, Parry’s second disc, strikes a nice balance between reflective balladry (After The Revolution parallels relationship tension with the Quebec City protests) and humorous left-leaning storytelling (live fave Always extols the virtues of environmentally friendly menstrual products). Still, it’s only when Parry goes deep below the surface that she really shines, as on the beautiful Ecuador, an elegy for her late aunt and uncle.
