Exitman

Rating: NN

Herbie Hancock cut the path on this neoteric standard thing, turning Nirvana into jazz and so on. Exitman slip the jazz bone to such unlikely characters as Björk, Alanis Morissette and the Smashing Pumpkins. There are original tunes here, but it’s the sensitive refit of familiar pop that makes this disc stand out, if only barely. Making jazz sound in sync with the era’s musical mood is the hardest job jazz cats have, and Exitman get you just about halfway there.

Exitman play the Rex Hotel Wednesday (August 25).
