FaltyDL – Hardcourage

Rating: NNNN

NYC producer/DJ FaltyDL (aka Drew Lustman) has been building a unique brand for himself over the past few years. His American perspective on UK dance sounds blends drum ‘n’ bass, 2-step and grime influences with Chicago deep house sounds and Detroit techno vibes. It was always hard to predict which direction he might take next, but on his new album, Hardcourage, he’s surprised us by finally bringing all those disparate tangents together into a cohesive sound.

In some ways, much of Hardcourage is closer to traditional house music than anything he’s done before, but he’s kept enough of the intricate drum programming and jazzy looseness of d ‘n’ b to put it in a class of its own. Beyond the fluidity of the rhythms, he’s also displaying a more developed ear for texture and atmosphere. His melodies are seductive and subtle, and Friendly Fires vocalist Ed Macfarlane’s guest appearance on She Sleeps provides a pleasant pop counterpoint to the lush hypnotic grooves.
