Fan Death

A Coin For the Well (Last Gang)

Rating: NNNN

On their debut EP, Vancouver/Brooklyn duo Fan Death successfully evade the nu-disco curse of sounding shapeless and forgettable. With help from producer/programmer Szam Findlay, Dandilion Wind Opaine and Marta Jacuibek-McKeever infuse that sound with baritone vocal weirdness and a heap of strings.

The opening track, Reunited, frames Opaine’s idiosyncratic voice with dark, new wave undertones. Power Surge takes a more traditional approach to disco, coupling non-synthesized violin with the kind of thumping bass line synonymous with the genre. The closer, Son Will Rise, incorporates keyboard stabs that lend the track an almost vogue-house feel.

At only 20 minutes long, the EP crosses a lot of distance and genres and is highly replayable.

Top track: Reunited
