Fantasia Barrino - now just Fantasia - has a unique voice, despite being compared to Aretha during her winning stint on American Idol. Unfortunately, it's also a bit grating and not the sort of thing I can listen to for a whole record without getting twitchy. Fantasia's somewhat disappointing debut, Free Yourself, was all-over-the-map and, save for an impressive rendition of Summertime, not particularly interesting. However, this new self-titled album is totally R&B. Hood Boy features a Supremes sample with rhymes from OutKast's Big Boi. Baby Makin' Hips is amazingly stupid but, hey, the world needs more tunes about big asses, right? The ballad I Feel Beautiful is fairly mundane and inoffensive. Uneligible is particularly good with its layered vocals atop monotonous lines, and I do love that it's not even a real word. It's like she's invented her own language.
