FANTASTIC PLASTIC MACHINE

Rating: NN

Any concerns Tomoyuki Tanaka had about his ultra-complex, deeply funky Fantastic Plastic Machine records not being played in clubs should be answered by this dreary though infinitely more straightforward record. Beautiful is the house record that’s always lurked within Tomoyuki’s cut-up beats. Unfortunately, it comes with a price. The beats are still stylish, and Tomoyuki continues to lift from the best on rolling gems like Love Is Psychedelic, but Beautiful is largely straight-ahead, four-four house, with none of the whimsy, novelty and furious cutting and pasting that made FPM records both danceable and listenable. Tomoyuki spins as part of Milk June 13.
