Unravelling the monster wall of sound that DJ god Norman Cook creates on Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars, using a zillion samples, loops, squelches, burps and big-ass beats, is like untying a knotted shoelace. But, man, it sounds good.
Essentially a full-on club set on disc, Cook's latest Fatboy Slim project shines brightest on two tracks, one featuring a monotone Jim Morrison repeating Bird Of Prey like a stoner mantra while Cook splatters the background with thick, monochromatic noise. A collaboration with Macy Gray and Bootsy Collins takes a turn to the funk, yielding equally manic results, but of all the weird sonic fragments Cook expertly stitches together, nothing is as mind-blowing as trying to figure out how the hell he made everything fit. Awesome.
