Inspired by a Brazilian restaurant in Paris of the same name, Favela Chic: Postonove is the sound of old and new Brazil slamming into each other in the DJ booth. There are dance-floor classics like Walter Wanderley's thumping organ epic Batucada, Jorge Ben's Cuidado Com O Bulldog and Elza Soares's Edmundo, but French producers Fla-Flu go well beyond the obvious. Side three of the double-album set is dedicated to new-school club killers, including Miami bass-style booty shakers built around thundering batucada breaks, some surprisingly smooth Portuguese rhyming and a Brazilian rap-rock cut-up of what sounds like a 2 Live Crew song. It's not what comes to mind when you think of Brazilian music, but that's the point here. The future sound of carnival.
