It's safe to say that the FemBots are one of Toronto's most underrated bands. Starting with their debut, Small Town Murder Scene, in 2003, they've consistently made boundary-pushing folk, rock and experimental music. Their latest, Calling Out, is no exception.
While the record leans more toward rock than their past efforts, it's still full of great hooks, thoughtful songwriting and odd sounds, due largely to the "junkinstruments" - musical instruments they made out of garbage - that were used on a number of tracks. Standouts include the industrialish Land Of Sea and the sweeping The End Of The Day.
The FemBots play the Music Gallery Friday (September 26).
