The all-caps moniker isn't just an obnoxious style choice; it's an acronym for "Fuck It Dog, Life's A Risk." If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about the band before spinning their debut record, just take a glance at the track list: Cheap Beer, Stoked And Broke, Wake Bake Skate. These L.A. skate punks make no secret of where they're coming from. This is fast, dirty garage rock about partying, surfing and little else.
But there's a reason FIDLAR keep showing up on so many "bands to watch in 2013" lists. Where so many Los Angeles bands are embracing a pot-hazed soft-rock, sun-kissed aesthetic, FIDLAR hark back to the amped-up fun of pop-punk and the influential DIY all-ages Smell scene. It's well executed, full of surf solos, shout-along choruses and fuzzed-out guitars. It's certainly not revelatory, but it makes no such claims.
