On this limited-edition 10-inch EP, Final Fantasy's Owen Pallett pays tribute to the songs of Alex Lukashevsky, frontman and songwriter of Toronto band Deep Dark United. The originals were quirky, off-kilter blues, but Pallett transforms them into lush arrangements that might sound more at home in a Broadway musical (albeit a very strange musical).
Recorded with a 35-piece orchestra, the disc really shows off Pallett's abilities as an arranger, and at the same time reveals a traditional side to Lukashevsky's compositions that you might have missed the first time around. It's often said that a good song sounds good no matter who's singing it, but it's equally true that a new context can help you rediscover those same songs in new ways.
