There’s something oh so familiar about the 10 songs on up-and-coming Montreal rock band Final Flash’s debut album: psychy doses of Crazy Horse-like guitar wailing, particularly on the title track vocalist Joey Chaperon Cyr’s clear, plaintive voice, which evokes Dave Grohl or Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch a Swervedriver-like sonic swirl.

But while it’s easy to become preoccupied by a game of Name That Influence while listening to this consistent debut, it’d be unfair to call the five-piece derivative. They add a fine mist of melancholy melodies atop the hypnotic guitars, aren’t afraid to throw in sitar or take things folkier, and go for ‘verbed-out production that’s equally commercial radio, psych rock and shoegaze.
Spin the album once and by the second go around you’ll catch yourself thinking you’re listening to a classic.
