Flaw

Rating: NNN

After listening to the first few bars of this Flaw disc, my first instinct was to throw it in the generic nouveau alternative metal pile and write it off forever. But then the vocals kicked in. Chris Voltz has excellent phrasing sensibilities, similar to those of Geddy Lee and a voice like a deeper, harsher Peter Gabriel. Flaw also create pleasant cadence and textured rhythm lines with screaming highs and melodic drops. My only major complaint? Voltz’s attempts at personal expression. How many times do I have to hear about the search for true meaning? Or someone’s empty soul? Or someone’s fight for inner strength? There are reasons why Charles Bukowski is a poet and the rest of us are not.
