FLESHTONES Do You Swing? (Yep Roc) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
Sure, there have been a few lame Fleshtones albums along the way - the 90s were pretty much a complete write-off - but, happily, they're back on track and, thanks to producer Rick Miller of Southern Culture on the Skids, they've got their Super RockTM mojo working. Recorded at Miller's Kudzu Ranch hideaway, the harp-howling Do You Swing? roars with the raunchy-but-right Excello sound of Jay Miller's legendary Crowley studio. The songs are short, sharp and hip-shaking, recalling the hard-hustling swagger of their early 80s peak years, and they throw in a nutty-genius cover of Led Zeppelin's Communication Breakdown for good measure. Sell your Strokes discs and get down with the Hexbreaking sound of the Fleshtones.
