Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band Sweet Return (independent) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
Considering David Buchbinder's side career in film soundtracks, it's not surprising that the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band's latest disc has a cinematic feel. Sweet Return is a very lyrical recording, more complex than anything the Toronto ensemble has tackled before and with less emphasis on the klezmer component. This is still Yiddish music, most obviously on the songs featuring Dave Wall's vocals, but Buchbinder has moved it well beyond its roots, toward a kind of global jazz. Buchbinder's trumpet plays a starring role, and his fluid lines offer a nice counterpoint to guest Jane Bunnett's sax. It's a lively, if disjointed session, so tightly arranged that there's no real room for the Bulgars to actually play with the tunes themselves. Hopefully things will be a bit looser when the Flying Bulgars hit Hugh's Room Saturday and Sunday (May 10-11).
