The Flying Bulgars celebrate 20 years at the Al Green Theatre Saturday and Sunday (February 9 and 10). Rating: NNN
The Flying Bulgars sparked a Canadian klezmer revival in 1988 with their daring performance of Eastern European Jewish songs at a local bar. Their new three-song demo continues to challenge the boundaries of music and politics with English lyrics and pop-infused tracks while holding fast to the genre’s traditions of yearning clarinets and deliberate rhythms.
Although produced by Dave Newfeld (of Broken Social Scene fame), it’s not likely that this disc will propel the Flying Bulgars into the mainstream. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing; some indie kids out there will get a kick out of its obscurity.
