Written in response to the issues of violence against and exploitation of women raised by the Robert Pickton trial, local punk intellectuals Fucked Up's latest EP is commendably high on concept but a little bloated in its delivery.
A two-song effort that clocks in at around 24 minutes, Year Of The Pig experiments further with the song lengths that caught fans off guard on FU's bound-to-be-a-classic Hidden World. The bulky title track comes precariously close to prog, with countless changing parts and phases. Sandy Miranda's jazzy vocals lead through piano noodling, guitar crescendos and percussion breakdowns all the way to Damian Abraham's signature shouted finale. Less a pop song than an intricate, complex composition, the track's lack of focus can feel a touch exhausting.
In contrast, the flip side, Black Hats, is a Father Damian scorcher. You can imagine the band killing when playing it live.
