50 Cent is one cold-?hearted bastard. Consistently nihilistic, Terminate On Site is 95 per cent gun-?clap rap, straight up. Straight Outta Southside is an endearing tribute to N.W.A.’s Compton ode, but, for real, these guys simply aren’t as gifted.
Although Lloyd Banks’s punchlines still have some kick, Tony Yayo remains, lyrically, the Eazy-E of G-Unit. Young Buck, dishonourably demoted to “feature” status, appears five times but still seems absent (and is removed from the liner notes and promo pics).
50 is cold. Jake One, Ty Fyffe, Rick Rock and Don Cannon are the better-known heat-makers here, but it’s all gut-?stabbing snares, chest-?stomping kick drums and head-?bashing bass lines. Sure, the beats bang like crazy, but the songs are emotionally hollow, thematically one-?dimensional and conceptually lifeless. TOS is DOA.
