Gang Starr The Ownerz (Virgin) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
The sky-high expectations for Gang Starr’s new disc unfortunately far outstripped what Guru and DJ Premier are able to deliver on The Ownerz. Sure, Primo’s head-nodding jams are tight as usual and Guru comes up with his share of dope rhymes, but anyone anticipating a revolution in sound is in for a disappointment. Instead of a bold step forward, the decision to mess with celebrity cameos from Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe and Jadakiss – instead of introducing some insanely great unknown talent – is a regrettable sideways step. As enjoyable as The Ownerz is to spin, Guru and Premier could’ve done this in 93, which for many is good enough.
