Garth Hudson

Rating: NNN

The Band’s keyboardist/accordionist, Garth Hudson, makes his long-overdue solo debut, which, like the cover depicting our bearded hero on the back of a giant snowy owl in flight, manages to blur the line between the sappy and the surreal with an off-kilter sense of humour. The self-indulgent synth-damaged overtures might’ve been better saved for slide shows at home, but Hudson shines when working in a group context — whether swapping licks with Levon Helm or Badal Roy. Still a team-player at heart. Garth Hudson makes a rare appearance at Club 279 Monday (July 15).
