Gentleman Reg

Heavy Head EP (Arts & Crafts)

Rating: NNNN

While we wait for another awesome full-length album from Gentleman Reg, the Toronto-based singer/songwriter offers up this EP of covers, B-sides and remixes to help the time pass. Like his last album, Jet Black, Heavy Head sees him jumping easily between folky ballads, anthemic indie rock and dance music. You might think this gives the proceedings a mixtape vibe, but Heavy Head flows much better than it sounds on paper.

He covers Chris Isaak (Wicked Game), and Stevie Nicks (Wild Heart) and collaborates with Final Fantasy’s Owen Pallett (on Justified), but the real revelations come in the remixes. Charlie Don’t Surf uncovers his latent big-room club potential in its reworking of We’re In A Thunderstorm, and Jim Guthrie throws us for a loop by lending an Outkast vibe to How We Exit.

Gentleman Reg opens up for the Hidden Cameras at the Opera House Saturday (December 5).
