GILLES
PETERSON Worldwide 2 (Talkin’
Loud/Universal) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
There may be no better source for underground, jazz-influenced club music than Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide radio show. It’s no surprise, then, that Worldwide 2 is like dialing up www.bbc.co.uk and checking out one of the DJ’s genre-clashing programs. Jazz bleeds into hiphop, gets chopped up by broken beats, goes to Brazil and then comes back by way of Finland. Peterson is intentionally wide-reaching on this set, bringing together everything from a rare Sun Ra track and a Cinematic Orchestra remix to Jazzanova, Gene Harris and Nu Spirit Helsinki. The smooth mix means that nothing stands out, and while there’s nothing too obscure about any of the tracks here, Peterson should be commended for digging beyond the norm. The most diverse DJ set you’re likely to hear all year.
