With her distinct voice, Goapele Mohlabane has always stood out as a quality singer/songwriter of the 'neo-soul' generation. And her background as an activist, well-educated musician and Hieroglyphics crew affiliate gives her cred from here to her hometown of Oakland, California. Her debut, Even Closer, was an understated R&B gem but scored no breakthrough pop hits to elevate her to the status of an Alicia Keys or Angie Stone. She clearly hopes to rectify that with Change It All, and her glam makeover emphasizes the point. Though this album has a sharper, more synthetic side, with lots of accessible melodies, it feels like an artistic compromise.
