Gold Chains Young Miss America (PIAS) Rating: NN
Gold Chains is a San Francisco-based former punk rocker who hangs with the Kid606 gang and busts semi-hiphop styles over operatic laptop beats. The beats are pretty thick, often bouncy and always very busy while still sounding crisp. But GC is continuously rapping throughout almost every song with no letup, and his Busta Rhymes/Everlast/Spearhead/Roots Manuva/Tom Waits flow doesn't do it for me. His subject matter is as contradictory as most other MCs: bitches, riches and America's enslavement to currency, the latter best (and most obviously) represented in the song Much Currency Flows. He has a decent sense of humour - even if he is a little too reliant on the idea that a white guy claiming to be jiggy and pimpish is a recipe for ironic hilarity - with a number of over-the-top and thought-provoking references throughout. I think it comes down to the fact that this music is closer to the future than I am, and I have yet to understand it. But maybe it's just shitty.
