Their latest, and first since the death of bassist Allen Woody, sees the former power trio grow to a foursome, and some tasty funkafied organ playing by newbie Danny Louis says the Mule might be onto something. That something, however, quickly devolves into a wholly derivative work. Warren Haynes is a master on the guitar, as evidenced by his ability to fill Duane Allman's shoes and revitalize an Allman Brothers Band that had Live At Casino Rama written all over them only a short time ago. But here it's as if the well ran dry. Haynes overcompensates by cramming the album with 75 minutes of music you'll swear Ronnie Van Zant wrote at 15.
Gov't Mule hit the Palais Royale Sunday (October 24).
