Odario Williams of Winnipeg rap crew Mood Ruff's new solo joint has a compound title like Aquemini, which fits because Calligraffiti is defined in part by its Outkast-like genre-hopping.
In fact, sometimes Big Boi and Andre's influence over Grand Analog is too obvious, as in Social Butterfly, whose chorus sounds too much like the one on Church from Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.
Otherwise, this is an ambitious album. Blink and it'll turn from Def Jux-style Blade Runner rap with distorted vocals (Get Live And Go) to folk 'n' b hiphop (Sittin' On Sunday), from vintage backpacker to dub.
Fortunately, Odario's solid production and a parade of adept live players throughout Calligraffiti unify that ecclecticism into one melodious, soulful effort.
Grand Analog launch their CD at Supermarket Wednesday (July 25).
