Grandpaboy Dead Man Shake ( Fat Possum ) Rating: NNN
There are few artists who can play drunk rock 'n' roll better than Paul Westerberg, but he clearly needs to get a better handle on junkie blues. Reviving his Grandpaboy alias for Dead Man Shake (out Tuesday) - which sounds like it was cut inside the trunk of a rusted-out Delta 88 buried in a field behind an Oxford, Mississippi, gas station - Westerberg croaks and stumbles through a series of hazy, distorted after-hours shuffles salted with bitterness, malevolence and heartache. Then he brings down the curtain with the woozy closing-time flourish of What Kind Of Fool Am I? He's never been closer to realizing his career-long dream of becoming Alex Chilton.
