The name Gregory and the Hawk conjures up an image of a rockabilly band likely fronted by a guy named Gregory, but it's really New Yorker Meredith Godreau, a breathy-voiced singer/songwriter who sometimes sounds eerily similar to Lisa Loeb. (Grey Weather's chorus even starts with the line "You say," making it hard not to mentally sing, "I only hear what I want to.")
The 11 songs on her second full-length disc play out like wistful lullabies, though a few get an energy jolt from busy drumming and lilting violins. Usually, though, it's just Godreau, her guitar and subtle arrangements. The strength is in her songwriting, which is melodically and lyrically interesting. Speeding things up now and then would add welcome variety; by disc's end, things get pretty same-y.
